Ada "Dolly" Montagh

    This house was the crown jewel of all the houses.
  • Dolly was a small person not beautiful, but very smart. Her aim was to make her
    daughter Éva Forrai rich.

Pal Montagh

  • Married Magdolna Horváth. She was a Christian, and the daughter of a High Court
    Judge, apart from her beauty she never had any money.
  • Pal Montagh established the tobacco industry in Hungary. Growing tobacco on his
    estates at Mako.
  • Pál Montágh had a daughter Maria Montagh who became Mrs Nicsovics.7
  • Aunty Hortense Schweiger tried to influence Stefanie Schweiger (Gyuláné Wellisch)
    to leave the more valuable house in her will to Pál Montágh, which would then be
    inherited by his daughter Maria.

  • When Apu went back to Budapest in 1973 Dezső Forrai still had all the shares from
    Gyula Wellisch. He showed them to Apu. They were in a suitcase which was full of
    American company stock papers. They still had full value in 1961 when they met in
    Budapest as at that time the Americans still redeemed stocks that were issued in
    American dollar, but by 1973 they had lost their value.
  • They amounted to 50-60 thousand dollars. A fortune in 1961 (some millions in today
    dollars). In the end nobody got anything because no one trusted any one.

    o and considerable land.
  • Half of the estate, consisting of the houses, was owned by Gyula Wellisch, the other
    half was held by his brother, and there was a lot more.
  • He was a Privy Councillor, noted builder and architect. He built with his brother the
    Müegyetem in Budapest.
  • He and his wife had no children and all her properties were divided among her
    sisters.

Lipot Montag

  • One of the leaders of the Hungarian Uprising.
  • Died at the Battle of Zenta on the 1st of February 1849. The town was overrun by
    Serbs who killed everyone they caught. It was a horrific slaughter.
